Whale Swim                                 Feb 2000

Dear Friends,

Well, despite many predictions that we would all end up in the belly of a whale, we returned safe and sound from our whales trip to the Silver Banks off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

Yes, it was awesome. And it had it's share of surprises. It took a couple of days of careful searching before we found some whales who showed as much interest in us as we had in them. This was very different behavior than when they're up here in New England, where they're happy to come over and say hello between mouthfuls of food.

I was delighted when we found a mother, calf and escort who let us get in the water with them. I felt great love and respect, my skin tingling, as the calf came up to check us out. He swam out from underneath his mom and ever so gracefully twirled his body, his long white pectoral fins draping gently across his body. As he rose, his eyes met mine, and I felt a wonderful sense of recognition flow between us. We were two souls seeing each other behind the masks of our physicality.

I was on the surface barely ten feet away from where he came to the surface. I watched mesmerized as his fluke moved gently past me. Then up came his mom, who was HUGE.

Two nights before, I'd had a dream where a baby whale had swum up to me and gently nibbled  the cheek on my face. His lips felt soft and tender, rubbery, like those of a horse taking sugar from your hand. This encounter was every bit as real as being in the water with them.

I've attached a photo of the baby here for you to look at. He's almost twenty feet long, and the large dark colored mass above him is mom! Looking into his eye, don't you feel a wonderful sense of love and connection to him?

Wishing you each many blessings,
